Small Green Cart Program
New Organics collection service begins October 1, 2019!
A Small Green Cart is being delivered to all Townhouse and Condo customers the last week in September. This includes all residential customers with individual garbage service who do not currently have green carts. The green cart can be used to collect food scraps, food-soiled paper, clean wood and yard trimmings. The Organic material will be sent to a composting facility to create compost to enrich our soils!
Customers will also receive a handy kitchen pail at no additional charge. The pail can be used to store food scraps and food-soiled paper until it is emptied into the small green cart for collection. The pail (and cart) can be lined with a compostable plastic bag, newspaper, brown paper bags or paper towels/napkins. Compostable bags are available at most grocery stores. The pail can be rinsed with soapy water or can be put in the dishwasher. Click here for more information about the Handy kitchen Pail.
This Organics collection service is a requirement of the franchise agreement between ACI of San Ramon and the City of San Ramon and is being provided to all single-family and multi-family residences. There is a reduced collection rate for customers who use the Small Green Cart collection rate vs. the basic Single-Family curbside collection rate (uses a 64-gallon, or larger, green cart). Click here for an explanation of the two Single-Family Residential rates.
The small green cart (20-gallon) measures: 19.75” wide x 23.5” deep x 34.5” tall
Sorting organics out of the waste stream can help reduce the amount of garbage collection services you need! There are smaller Garbage and Recyclables carts available (20-gallon and 35-gallon). If you do not already subscribe to the smallest (20-gallon) garbage cart, organics recycling can help you to decrease your garbage service and reduce your garbage bill.
You are receiving the individual Small Green Cart Organics collection service because you already have individual Recyclables and Garbage cart collection service in place. If you think shared organics containers would work better for your complex, please contact your HOA or property manager.
City of San Ramon ordinances will require all customers to have adequate Organics collection services. State Legislation (SB 1383) will require the City to provide organics collection service to all residents and businesses. SB 1383 requires a 50 percent reduction in the level of the statewide disposal of organic waste from the 2014 level by 2020 and a 75 percent reduction by 2025. Reducing Organic materials sent to the landfills helps fulfill city and state requirements by reducing the amount of methane that is released into the environment. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Recycling our organics is one small thing that each of us can do to help protect the environment.
Give it a try! The Small Green Cart can make a BIG difference in reducing waste! You will be surprised at how much organic materials you can divert from the garbage. Think about it…you are already putting these materials in a gray Garbage container, now you are simply putting them in a green Organics container!
Together we can all make a difference! Thank you for your efforts!
